Description

Recirculation of water is now a standard aspect of water management in horticulture. It avoids needless waste of expensive nutrients and water. But re-using drain water (and other water) is not without risks. The water that comes back from the greenhouse can contain unwanted micro-organisms, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. There are various ways to remove these micro-organisms. One of these solutions is the Kathari ultrafiltration, developed by Van der Ende Group, which uses membrane technology to achieve a very high removal rate with great cost-efficiency.

benefits

  • High physical removal rate of:

    viruses (Log4)

    bacteria and fungi (Log6)

    organic contaminants

  • Less organic/biological contamination in the watering system

  • Not sensitive to turbidity in the water

  • Makes it possible to re-use nutrients

  • Very low operating costs: short payback period

  • 50 – 85% lower energy consumption than other techniques

  • Modular system (easy to upscale)

  • Contributes to sustainability

  • Removes ToBRFV

The Kathari uses ultrafiltration to remove pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi, from drain water, while retaining the expensive nutrients.

  • The Kathari ultrafiltration is an excellent filtration technology for the removal of ToBRFV. In a trial conducted by Groen Agro Control, the effectiveness of UF on ToBRFV-contaminated drain water was tested. After filtering ToBRFV-contaminated drain water with a UF filter, no infections were found in a bioassay using two sets of five tomato plants. In this trial, no infectious virus was detected after the use of our ultrafiltration system.

  • UF (ultrafiltration) is a process that uses water pressure and membranes to separate different substances from one another. The membranes allow water, ions, and small molecules to pass through, while larger molecules in the water, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and suspended solids, are retained and removed.

  • The Kathari is modular, which means it can be built to match any required capacity. Whether it’s dirty drain water, basin water, or large surface water sources, the Kathari can be used for all of them. The ideal configuration will be determined based on your specific situation.
