In veel gevallen wijst dit op cavitatie: het ontstaan en instorten van dampbellen in de waaier. Cavitatie veroorzaakt niet alleen geluid en trillingen, maar kan binnen korte tijd leiden tot beschadiging van waaiers, lagers en sealvlakken. Hierdoor begint het medium lokaal te koken, ook al ligt de temperatuur ver onder het kookpunt.
