De methode wordt veel gebruikt in de glastuinbouw voor productie van schoonwater en in industrie voor proceswater. Onder hoge druk wordt water door deze membranen geperst. Opgeloste stoffen zoals mineralen, metalen en microverontreinigingen worden daarbij tegengehouden. De verhouding tussen deze stromen wordt uitgedrukt als recovery: het percentage ruw water dat wordt omgezet in schoon water.
